This will be a quick hit....I just wanted to give you the web addresses that Police Officer Warren Sekula recommended for parents concerned about their childrens' safety in the car. He suggested three sites:
1.) childseatssave.org
2.) nhtsa.gov (This is the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration)
3.) safekids.org
Will try to update tomorrow! I look forward to meeting you Saturday, August 13th at Mamaphobia at the Apollo Theatre in Chicago. Thanks for listening...have a great weekend. Love, Eileen

How would you like to play golf...maybe even with me....for a good cause...to help our troops...to benefit your local community? I receive a lot of information, on a daily basis, about a number of charitable events that need highlighting, that need media attention. I'm more than happy to let you know about a few of them here...and tell you which ones personally mean a lot to me and which ones I'll be attending:
Monday, August 8th--The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Golf Outing. It is their 10th annual outing, at Boulder Ridge Country Club in Lake in the Hills, to raise money for the children of Marines and of former Marines pursuing higher education. Last year, the group raised more than $80,000 to benefit children across the country. This year, their goal is to raise $100,000. I will be there and look forward to it. Men and women make a finanical sacrifice as well as physical one to serve our country. Worrying about paying for college while they fight on the front lines should be the least of their burdens. If you would like more info, call Ron at 312-431-6554.
Monday, August 15th--To The Troops With Love Charity Golf Outing. I received an amazing email from a listener named Suzie Hagmeyer. She wrote: "Last December my company, Preferred Planning Concepts decided to scale down our Christmas party and use those funds to mail 380 pounds of perishable food items, medications, reading materials, personal hygiene products to soldiers in Iraq. The feedback we got back was just amazing--they got the boxes a couple of days after Christmas and said it was like a second Christmas. It got us thinking...what else could we do?" So, they will be hosting a charity golf outing with National City Mortgage and launch "To The Troops With Love" Foundation. The entire event is underwritten, so every dollar donated will go directly to the troops through the foundation. The golf outing will be held on August 15th at the Cress Creek Country Club in Naperville with 11am registration, 11:30 lunch, 1pm shotgun and cocktail hour and dinner and silent auction to follow. I will be there and look forward to it. For information, call Suzie at 847-375-0505.
Wednesday, August 31st--The Countryside Chamber of Commerce is hosting their 7th Annual Golf Outing and dinner...at the Carriage Greens Drive in Darien, IL. Call 630-985-3400. All the proceeds go to The Community Extension Project (CEP), which is a non profit youth service organization. They provide after school programs and youth leadership programs for primarily Lyons and Proviso Township. I will try to be at this golf outing as well. (I'll be as good as Harrington after the month of August!)
I will be filling in for Don and Roma while they vacation next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Look forward to wakin' up with ya from 5am-9am. On tomorrow's show, Thursday, we welcome gubernatorial candidate, Ron Gidwitz, giving Rod a run for his money in the Governor's race. Look forward to it! Eileen Byrne

STOP THE PRESSES! I forgot to ask...Is PlayGIRL available in the library?
Media Bias, Playboy in the Public Library and London Calling Part 3
When a man, a father, kills his children...as in the alleged case in Zion, Illinois, do we hear about the man's mental condition? Most likely he suffers from some mental disorder, has some sort of depression or anger issues, at the very least, for a guy to kill a helpless child, his own flesh and blood... but reviewing some cases recently where a man has murdered his children, the newspaper doesn't mention it. Contrast that with the Sun Times and the Chicago Tribune today, in their coverage of the woman in Dyer, Indiana, accused of murdering her sons with a 10-pound weight:
The Chicago Sun Times mentions M's alleged depression 85 words into the article. The Trib writes about depression just 135 words into their story in the Metro section. That is unbelievable. She hasn't even been diagnosed officially, no mention of a doctor in the Sun Times..and yet "Neighbors and family members have said M. appeared depressed for months." Is it just me...or does the mention of the appearance of depression seem to justify the alleged murder of a child with a ten pound weight? And if a Dad knocks a child out with a baseball bat, are we concerned about his pressures of being the breadwinner of the family? Or depressed about his job or his deteriorating marriage...or any number of problems a Dad might face? Nah...we want Dad's head on a stick...but why doesn't Mom generate the same outrage?
LONDON CALLING PART THREE!
Scroll down for my view that some Muslim leaders are just as guilty for these London attacks. But let me tell you that today's NY Times opinion page was a refreshing change. An article entitled "Why Do They Hate Us? Not Because of Iraq", by Olivier Roy was a surprising column. Here are some excerpts:
"First, let's consider the chronology. The Americans went to Iraq and Afghanistan after 9/11 not before. Mohamed Atta and the other pilots were not driven by Iraq or Afghanistan. Were they then driven by the plight of the Palestinians? It seems unlikely. After all, the attack was plotted well before the second intifada began in September, 2000, at a time of relative optimism in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.
Another motivating factor, we are told, was the presence of "infidel" troops in Islam's holy lands. Yes, Osama Bin Laden was reported to be upset when the Saudi royal family allowed Western troops into the kingdom before the Persian Gulf war. But Mr. bin Laden was by that time a veteran fighter committed to global jihad.
Second, if the conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine are at the core of the radicalization, why are there virtually no Afghans, Iraqis or Palestinians among the terrorists? Rather the bombers are mostly from the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, Egypt and Pakistan--or they are Western-born converts to Islam. Why would a Pakistani or a Spaniard be more angry than an Afghan about American troops in Afghanistan? It is precisely because they do not care about Afghanistan as such, but see the United States involvement there as part of a global phenomenon of cultural domination.
"Born again" or converts, they are rebels looking for a cause...It is also interesting to note that none of the Islamic terrorists captured so far had been active in any legitimate antiwar movements or even in organized political support for the people they claim to be fighting for. They don't distribute leaflets or collect money for hospitals and schools. They do not have a rational strategy to push for the interests of the Iraqi or Palestinian people....they are a lost generation, unmoored from traditional societies and cultures, frustrated by a Western society that does not meet their expectations."
And my own EB postscript...left to their own devices...they will destroy themselves, to that I say good....BUT they'll destroy anyone else who challenges them in the process... and we won't let that happen to the innocent...and since the UN won't do anything...look at Darfur as a perfect example...we have to wage and win this war...because otherwise it will be innocent Americans who pay the price of doing nothing.
Last, but certainly not least...I want to thank Mark Decker for appearing today on the show and being an Army of One...challenging the Oak Lawn Public Library system in an effort to rid the library from tax payer funded pornography in the form of Playboy. He is currently circulating a petition and has received 400 signatures already! He needs your help. If you are an Oak Lawn resident and are concerned about men becoming aroused by Playboy in a public place...sign his petition and mail it to.....10300 S. Cicero Ave. #415 Oak Lawn, IL 60453-2702.
Thank you for listening today and for reading. THANK YOU so much for all who joined us at Cub Foods in Tinley Park. We had close to 200 folks and raised almost $1,000 for our troops, not even including the amount raised by certain products that send a donation to the troops...and my own donation of my appearance fee. You guys are wonderful and I'm honored to know you!
Don't forget to tune in on Monday. I have not received much information yet about our Minuteman experience in October...but I got a call and had a great conversation with Chris Simcox, President of the Minuteman Project and he'll join us on Monday morning to become part of the movement. Don't know yet whether we'll go to the southern or northern border yet. I also talked to one of our regular local Minuteman, Rick Bieseda, who is part of the Chicago Minutemen.....and if you would like to contact them, do so at chicagominutemanproject.com
Rick has served on the border in the past and has good information as to how you can join. If you would like to serve with me, make sure you tune in on Monday!
Have a great weekend and stay cool....Poor Sheila! Love, Eileen

I'm going to let you play talk show host on this one. YOU decide if this is what we refer to as "media bias". Email your responses to eileen.f.byrne@abc.com
This is about possible bias in the Chicago Tribune. Comes from a listener named Kevin in Waukegan:
"Eileen, just wanted to point out a little slant and a missed opportunity the Trib played this a.m.
Page one on the Trib is filled with the very important cell phone on planes issue, as well as a couple important bylines--The Rehnquist issue (legit), the charter school issue (also legit), and flip flops at the White House. Oh my! There is also the ever present-will-not-die Abu Ghraib issue.
On page three, in the world section is an article on a poll of Islamic nations, headline reads, "Support of Bin Laden drops among Muslims." This is pretty uplifting news, and something that I would have loved to see on the front page. Next, on page four, "Iraqi, US forces foil suicide bomb attack" also includes the byline on the arrest of Abu Seba, the suspect in the Egyptian envoy murder. Two big victories for our side and setbacks for the terrorists.
What gives, the rehash of Abu Graib crap and cell phones on planes are more important than anything that might play positive on the war on terror. Go figure.
Have a relatively unbiased day.
Kevin
Okay, what say you? Is it bias to not have this on the front page? You know, I know from being in the news...the "You Wore Flip Flops to the White House?!" story and the "High Flying Debate: Even if Cell Phone use is allowed on airplanes, the question remains: Is it a good idea?" story...those were pre-planned stories and were ready to go, well before yesterday, as opposed to the survey done in the Islamic community about Bin Laden's stature going down...that survey was released yesterday. But I can't understand...why they couldn't switch Abu Graib and Bin Laden stories. Bias? I can't think of another reason. That said, it's good to have the Bin Laden story on page three...that's not the back of the book...but if I saw that poll on the front page...you bet I'd buy that paper. Now, don't tell me that it's the policy about poll numbers off the front page...I certainly saw a lot of negative Bush numbers from polls making the front page headlines.
Anyway, take a crack at it...email me your thoughts at eileen.f.byrne@abc.com--I'll have your emails on Monday's show.

Pretty Sneaky Sis. Nice try Blago...going around the democratic process to fund embryonic stem cell research. We need to address this, debate this and get our legislators involved. Call 'em back. Get them into the General Assemby. I'll call Emil Jones and Mike Madigan every day if I have to. Call them and get them back in session:
Emil Jones: 773-995-7748
Mike Madigan: 773-581-8000
Email me and let me know what happens. I will be calling after a meeting this afternoon.

The Governor sneaks his way around the Illinois Legislature to fund stem cell research to the tune of ten million bucks. This is an outrage...for three reasons.
First, where did this ten million dollars come from? We can't fund our pension plans, we have to have the Tollway system in place to supposedly fund road repair and infrastructure. Democrats have been crying that they need more money for education...and I don't mind giving good incentives for better teachers to teach in our lowest-performing schools. Wouldn't that money be better used for a number of things-- fill in blank here ___________________________---than providing $10 million for unproven, ineffective, experimental research and killing the unborn in the process? But...I can see another avenue in this debate. We could do more research to cure leukemia, spinal cord injuries and Parkinson's and assist in funding it. Why not use adult stem cells, umbilical cord stem cells or placentally-derived stem cells. Look at the example of a woman named Laura. She was in a car accident in 2001 and broke her neck and was paralyzed from the chest down. Her treatment was from a mix of adult stem cells and other cells obtained from olfactory tissue inside her nose. The cells were transplanted in her damaged spinal cord and, after the surgery, she was able to move her foot, and can now walk with braces. Treatment: ADULT STEM CELLS
How about a woman named Patrizia, diagnosed with leukemia. She was able to use the stem cells from umbilical cord blood from her daughter Victoria, which were used for a transplant. Today, Patrizia is in remission. Treatment: UMBILICAL CORD STEM CELLS
The second reason for outrage is how Governor Rod skirted the democratic process to fund this. Tried the legislature, couldn't get it through. Didn't have the votes, because we the people, who put our state represenatives and senators in office, made our voices heard on this issue. No tax money to be used for destroying life in the form of an embyo. Gov. "Do What I Feel Is Right" "I Could Outlaw Abortion Because It's the Right Thing" Blagojevich signed an executive order. Went right around the process. A lawsuit may need to be filed here.
We will stay on this. Senator Rauschenberger is speaking out about this...we will try to track him down today to see if he'll address this issue.
The third reason for outrage is that none of the media ever points out...that the use of embyonic stem cell treatment is purely experimental for one... and for two, not illegal. Private companies can use their money for this research. As my guest, Bob Gilligan of the Catholic Conference of Illinois pointed out this morning...if a cure was on the horizon...as the media loves to speculate...wouldn't they be doing this? Coming up with the cure for Parkinson's Disease. Think of the accolades a private company could receive! The money they would reap! They're not doing it. Why? The fact is that no therapies in humans have ever been successfully carried out using embryonic stem cells. What does happen, we kill life to try, in vain, to save life.
Also, speaking of lost life, we will have Mark Fuhrman on tomorrow to discuss his new book...I couldn't put it down...about Terri Schiavo. Tune in tomorrow! Eileen Byrne

Great discussion about the visa waiver program and illegal immigration this morning. I think the best thing to come out of it...that we can do something this --about terrorists sneaking through the Mexican and Canadian borders. We can do something about a guy who smuggled 200 Lebanese, Hezbollah fundraisers and sympathizers...who not only pay money to sneak into the country...but then actively fundraise when they get here. This from ABC News..."Lebanese carpenter Mahmoud Youssef Kourani, smuggled in over the California border, admitted spending part of his time in the United States raising money to send back to his country to support Hezbollah-- at least $40,000, according to an FBI affidavit." Doesn't that make you feel good? How about this: "an AP investigation found these are just some of the many pipelines in Central and South America, Mexico and Canada that have illegally channeled thousands of people into the United States from so-called "special-interest" countries-- those identified by the US government as sponsors or supporters of terrorism."
What can we do? Stay on our elected representatives and our President, who aren't doing enough to address this situation.
And when that doesn't work...let's protect the border ourselves. We talked to Gary Cole, one of the directors of the national Minuteman Project. They are looking for volunteers to secure the border during the month of October. They did it in April...they're doing it again. This time, I'm going to join them, and I urge you to volunteer. This is the ONLY WAY that politicians will see that we our serious. We back up our words with actions....and we bring BIG NUMBERS....and big numbers...mean VOTES.
Check out minutemanhq.com for how to volunteer or locally through chicagominutemanproject.com They are looking for men and women to patrol the Mexican and Canadian borders. I told Gary today that I will be there...at whichever border I'm needed most...and he is promising that we can have a section of the border...so that we can all volunteer together. Let me know if you are interested. Send an email at eileen.f.byrne@abc.com

I predicted the hoopla about Karl Rove. We discussed it in depth yesterday. My prediction...is that this is going to blow over. Why? I think that most people really don't care about this story...it is detailed and complicated. You can't get dumb liberals excited over something they can't understand. Sorry...I don't mean to insult you...and maybe you understand that this is all about politics...Ambassador Joseph Wilson was dispatched by his wife, Valerie Plame, (not Dick Cheney, not George Tenet) to investigate whether Saddam was procuring uranium from Niger. He lied about the report...because Saddam, according to the Senate intelligence and British intel was seeking to buy uranium back in 2002. The Butler Report (from factcheck.org)..."After nearly a six month investigation, a special panel reported to the British Parliamnet July 14th that British intelligence had indeed concluded back in 2002 that Saddam was seeking to buy uranium. The review panel was headed by Lord Butler of Brockwell." The Time mag reporter, Matt Cooper was biased....believing Joe Wilson that he was dispatched by Cheney...and Karl Rove called and said don't believe this guy....his wife told him his mission was to investigate this "crazy report." So Wilson was biased against his own investigation and the administration from the very beginning.
Important to know....and as I said Monday...The crime is whether Karl Rove named names...he did not..and Matt Cooper's emails prove that...that was why they needed Cooper's cooperation...and the most important...it is a crime to knowingly disclose the name of covert agent...according to the Intelligence Identities Protection Act. Plame was neither named nor was she an agent. This will pass. It is like Gitmo...a non-story.
I could go on and on.....but I'll spare you. If you would like to meet in person to chat and vent....I will be at Cub Foods supporting our military on July 20th, 160th and Harlem Avenue in Tinley Park from 1-3pm. PLEASE take the time to join us and support our troops! Thank you! Eileen Byrne

Why does the United States still have a Visa Waiver Program that makes it easy for aliens from 27 countries and Canada to enter the United States? Especially when we are concerned that aliens from those countries that participate in the Visa Waiver Program may be involved in criminal activity and terrorism? What is the Visa Waiver Program? Special guest tomorrow...we'll tell you all about it and why it is dangerous.
Also...MINUTEMAN ALERT! We are going to talk to the folks at the National Minuteman Project. They need your help. And I'm ready to head to the border. Join us tomorrow morning at 9am.
Don't forget..scroll down to sign a message of condolence to our friends in the UK.

I found this as ironic as hell. I was doing some cleaning in my office this morning...going through some old articles...found this one from The NY Times...dated August 3, 1990 after Saddam invaded Kuwait. Saddam was called "the Hitler of the Middle East" by none other than the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island, who went on to criticize President Bush (the elder, nat) for not having moved earlier against Hussein to forestall an invasion. Representative Lee H. Hamilton, Dem of Indiana complained that there had been "a kind of inertia" to American policy toward Iraq in recent weeks. Senator David Boren, Dem, Oklahoma, was briefed by the CIA and noted that oilfields are only 250 miles from Kuwait, with no terrain "that would impede a rapid movement of forces" by Iraq. He continued, "We have to understand that our national interests are very much at stake. I think it would be wrong to underestimate aims of Saddam Hussein. He really hopes in the long run to put Iraq on a par with the kind of power he sees the Western powers as having." The end of the article..."It took the Iraqi forces, using weapons largely supplied by the Soviet Union, France and China, little time to overwhelm the Kuwaiti defenders."
So little has changed. You might think otherwise...but the policy of the opposition is just to complain, to denigrate, attack and make charges and see what sticks.
See below to send a message of condolence to our friends in the UK. I signed the book at the Wrigley Building yesterday. Long lines. I was happy to wait...and I'll tell you a story on Monday about that. See you then, 9am Sharp!. God Bless you..Eileen

LONDON'S CALLING Part 2
Today, I'll be heading over to the British consulate office at the Wrigley Building to sign the book of condolence to show our support for our British friends, the victims and their families who will have to live with the tragic events of their September 11th, 7/7/05. I really commend the Brits...true, many took today off and had a long weekend to escape today's commute...but those who braved the "tube" and the bus, said they were not going to let terrorists dictate their activity..and they wouldn't give in to the terrorists whose primary agenda is restricting our freedom. They fear freedom...because it stands for everything they are against. See the blog below, if you would like to send condolence via email.
I think there are some things that we need to be concerned about as we continue to fight this war:
Where are the Muslim Leaders? It is not enough for them to denounce the attacks. They should be defending the freedom they enjoy living in America, if they do live here. You live here, You worship here, You raise families here...can you not even tell these jihadists that no one supports them in your mosques? Air THAT on Al Jazeera. And, I love how the denunciation ALWAYS seems to come with...we fear retaliation from the British or Americans. WHERE? The M.O. seems to be...let's deflect from the actual terrorists and change the agenda to blaming the West once again. And even if they are given a harrassing "look" or email, that's the fault of the terrorists to begin with. The terrorists are causing this reaction about Islam.
Secondly, where are the Muslim leaders of Saudi Arabia, of Egypt, Jordan? We do business with these countries, we are the most generous when it comes to supporting the Palestinians? Why doesn't any of this get reported?
The fact is...it doesn't get reported on the "Arab Street" here and in the Muslim world because these so-called leaders deflect from their own lack of leadership, the problems they face in their own countries, and blame the United States for their own problems. Therefore, our fight is not really just with these jihadists, it's with the entire Middle East. Many of the youth of Iran are with us...their leadership is not. The millions who live in Iraq are with us...the terrorists are not...and the fight in Bagdad, in the Sunni Triangle...has now become the front line of this world war. The professor, with all due respect to him, was wrong today. Yes, there might be more suicide bombers. But only because this new front line has become the dividing line between freedom and evil. If freedom and democracy succeed in Iraq, the dictatorships will fall like dominoes. And that's exactly what the "Arab Street", financing these jihadists, fear the most. That's why the bombing continues. That's why London's attack has occured. They are targeting our European allies because they sense our weakness of resolve when it comes to Iraq. They were helped by Spain's pull-out. The Brits are a different bunch. They might have George Galloway demanding the troops home...but the British never gave in to the IRA...I don't think they'll cave now.
Thank you for reading. God Bless you this weekend and pray for the families struck by Al Qaeda's latest attempt at shaking our will. To look at those series of attacks, couple of things to keep in mind. They were detonated by timers...not homicide bombers...possibly because they don't have enough in their ranks? The attacks were in London to shake them from Iraq...but we're in Iraq too. Are they trying desperately to get at us and have not been successful in the United States?
Next week, we will have a new look at immigration, visas, and of course, our open borders. We'll also have a discussion with Mark Fuhrman, and his book on the investigation into the death of Terri Schiavo. We'll talk to him live on Thursday morning. Thanks again for reading. See you Monday. Eileen Byrne

LONDON'S CALLING
We're with you and we're praying for you. Today, 7/7/05 is Great Britain's September 11th...9/11/01. We woke up to the news of the horrific bombings of London's subway underground and bus system. We immediately mobilized, rescheduled our interview with Mark Fuhrman about his new book about Terri Schiavo (rescheduled for 10am, July 14th,) went live to London and spoke with Dr. Matthieu Deflem, author of "Policing World Society".
Today's terrorism is a wakeup call to anyone who believes that Al Quaeda is going away anytime soon. With Spain's pullout from Iraq last year, these monsters are only emboldened. The terrorists don't like us any more if we don't fight back. (IE..first World Trade Center bombing, Somalia, bombings of the USS Cole, embassy bombings in Kenya/Tanzania. When are we going to realize that we're in this to WIN?!
Tomorrow, we will talk to a senior editor of TIME magazine, live from London right at 9am. Stay tuned to WLS for all the latest. Please pray for our troops...and our friends overseas in London.
To sign a message of condolence, go to www.britainusa.com/chicago
Then, click on press and public affairs. Click on email address for contact...to send a message of sympathy. London's Calling...and we need to be there for them. God Bless you. Eileen Byrne

Is it only men who have violent, outrageous meltdowns--or are we women prone to road rage and assault too? I was just reading about how Kenny Rogers--not of "The Gambler" but of the Texas Rangers-- was suspended for 20 games and fined 50K by Major League Baseball on Friday for an outburst that sent a TV cameraman to the hospital who subsequently(immediately) slapped him with a (ka-ching)lawsuit. There were two incidents that occurred today, the 4th of July, that prompt this question. The first involved a friend (male)... who gave the finger to a guy driving on the shoulder who then tried to cut in in front of the suckers who follow the rules of the road. That erupted into a verbal altercation. Then, at the Crown Point Parade a fight over ...you won't even believe what....ended in one arrest and one guy taken to the hospital in an ambulence as children were sobbing on the sidelines, wondering if their Daddy was going to go to jail. I was shaking my head asking myself why do guys act like jackasses? (I don't know actually if I can curse on this thing...so that's as far as I'll go...but I was going to type much worse.) How about why do guys act like such %$#@*^! jerks? (That was quite a torrent...believe me!) Anyway, I'll tell you all about the assault at the Crown Point 4th of July Parade and a whole lot more between 9-11am Tuesday morning. Hope you had a safer weekend than I. And I haven't even mentioned attempting to register at Babies R Us with a pregnant woman. See you tomorrow. Eileen

THE SUMMER OF THE SUPREMES STARTS NOW! With Sandra Day O'Connor's retirement announcement, we are gearing up for a great summer battle. No more sharks, missing teenagers, SARS, other distracting stories that don't affect the future of this country. The Pledge of Allegiance, killing unborn babies, Ten Commandments, eminent domain, aren't all of those issues more important than a shark bite? We'll have all the latest as it unfolds.
